Fried Green Tomatoes
First let me remind all my readers and guests, there are only 9 days left to enter this months Culinary Smackdown Challenge “Battle Chile”. Follow the link to post your entry today!!!
Ingredients
Ingredients
4-6 green tomatoes sliced thick
1 cup flour
1/2 cup corn meal
1 teaspoon salt
1 teaspoon pepper
1 cup butter or vegetable oil
This is my favorite version of fried green tomatoes. There are other recipes that call for eggs and making more of a batter and deep frying just too heavy for me...method:Slice tomatoes thickly, in a medium bowl mix dry ingredients, flour both sides of a tomato and place in a hot skillet, repeat until your skillet is full but the tomatoes aren't to crowded.

Cook on first side for 3-5 minutes without turning, flip over and cook the other side 3-5 minutes. The idea is to creat a very brown crisp crust without loosing any of the flour mix. Season with salt and pepper taste.
Serve alone or as a side dish
These look delicious and I have a mountain of green tomatoes to try out your recipe. Perfect timing - thanks! Beautiful photos, too.

ReplyDeleteHi Vicki, a mountain of green tomatoes...I'm jealous! I love green tomatoes in a variety of dishes, Chow-Chow, Green Tomato Salsa, Stewed Green Tomatoes and Okra...just to name a few. Nice to see you!! Thanks for stopping by..
ReplyDeletekitchen flavours, you have to try this recipe!! There is nothing like a fried green tomato! The flavor is totally different from a ripe tomato. You also need to watch the movie "Fried Green Tomatoes"!! Adapted from the novel "Fried Green Tomatoes at the Whistle Stop Cafe" written by Fanny Flagg is one of my favorite movies (a bit of a tear jerker) but has a wonderful scene where the main character fries up green tomatoes for the first time. Fanny Flagg is a wonderful novelist and cookbook author of the Whistle Stop Cafe Cookbook. You probably already know all that but I get excited when I write about green tomatoes!! lol!
